Stony Run Greenhouse¶
Stony Run Greenhouses is a small, family-run hydroponic operation nestled in the heart of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. What began as a single greenhouse has grown into a network of sites focused on ultra-fresh lettuce, salad greens, microgreens, and herbs—especially basil. Today, they rely on state-of-the-art, edge-AI–driven, controlled-environment hydroponic systems that allow them to harvest consistently high-quality produce for local families, schools, and grocery stores year-round. Their greens don’t travel across the country; they stay local. You’ll find Stony Run’s lettuce and greens on the shelves of places like Friendly City Food Co-op, Crozet Market, and other regional market, in local schools, and on the menus of some of the top-quality restaurants throughout the Valley, where they’re featured alongside other Virginia producers.
Powered by LAB0, Agrobotics & EnkiOS¶
As Stony Run grew, Scott and Rilla needed a way to manage multiple greenhouses in different locations without giving up the hands-on quality that defines their produce. That’s where LAB0, Agrobotics, and EnkiOS came in. LAB0 provides the edge AI compute backbone that sits right at the greenhouse—close to the plants, not dependent on the cloud. Agrobotics delivers the automation layer that connects sensors, pumps, valves, lights, cameras, and controllers into a single, unified system. EnkiOS, the hydroponic farming operating system, ties it all together.
With EnkiOS running on LAB0’s edge hardware, every greenhouse Stony Run operates—no matter where it’s located—shows up in one central "pane of glass." From a single dashboard, Scott and Rilla can: Monitor temperature, humidity, nutrient levels, water flow, and light cycles in real time across all greenhouses. Adjust irrigation, dosing, and lighting schedules without driving from site to site. Receive alerts if anything drifts out of range, so they can fix issues before they affect a single head of lettuce. Track crop performance by variety and location, using historical data to fine-tune recipes for romaine, mixes, and herbs.
Because the system is built around local-first edge computing, Stony Run’s automation keeps working even if the internet goes down. Each greenhouse runs independently on EnkiOS, and LAB0’s edge AI orchestrates everything over secure local networks, with Agrobotics providing the automation logic that keeps the plants in perfect conditions 24/7. The result is simple: more consistency, less guesswork, and a lot less time spent chasing down problems in person. Scott and Rilla get to focus on growing, relationships, and new opportunities instead of wiring, spreadsheets, and manual checks.
Stony Run Story¶
Stony Run Greenhouses grew out of owner Scott Miller’s desire to build something that would bring his family closer together. What started as that simple goal has become a thriving, multi-site greenhouse operation focused on romaine lettuce, mixed greens, and a growing selection of herbs. Building the greenhouse business wasn’t easy. Scott is open about the challenges of starting a small agricultural operation, and he boils his advice down to a simple mantra: "Don’t give up." That persistence has helped Stony Run grow from an idea into a respected local supplier. Rilla is the customer-facing heartbeat of the business. Stony Run’s social media and ordering posts frequently direct customers to contact Rilla directly for orders, pre-orders, and availability, showing that she plays a central role in coordinating sales and keeping customers connected to what’s coming out of the greenhouses each week.
Rooted in the Shenandoah Valley¶
From supplying local co-ops, general stores, and farm stands to partnering with schools and restaurants and appearing at regional food events. Stony Run Greenhouses is very much a Shenandoah Valley story: small, family-run, rooted in place, and focused on feeding neighbors well. With LAB0, Agrobotics, and EnkiOS supporting their automation and edge AI infrastructure, Scott and Rilla can scale thoughtfully—adding new greenhouses, new crops, and new partnerships—without losing the local, personal touch that makes Stony Run such a valued part of the Valley’s food system.
